Interview with Van Canto

Interview with Inga and Stefan (Van Canto)

April 2010

Silvana:Hi Inga
Thanks for doing the interview for Stratovana's Music Magazine.
How are you doing?

Inga: Hi, I’m fine, thank you! Thanks for your interest in Van Canto.

Silvana:It goes very well with Van Canto. The new album Tribe of Force is out right now (i just received the album more than a week ago) The album sound awesome and great pics in the booklet!

I’m glad you like it. We are very proud of it and happy with the result because it was really hard work.

Silvana:What is the difference (technically) between this album and the other two?
The biggest difference has been between our first album “a storm to come” and our second one “hero”. On “hero” we worked together with Charlie Bauerfeind for the first time. He had a great impact on our sound, and on the way we use our vocals to imitate instruments. So with Tribe of Force we continued this successful way of producing. Charlie is a great guy and a great producer.

A few covers are on this cd too. Master of Puppets from Metallica. This song fits for the Van Canto's. The song is more than 8 minutes, great production, can you tell more about this song. One of my faves is Last Night Of The Kings, great lyrics! Maybe Inga can tell more about her part in this song?
We focused more on own songs this time, but Master of Puppets is a good song to show how heavy metal a cappella can be. Great you like Last Night… It’s one of my favourites, too. My part in this song is a very intimate one. It’s not that easy to sing because this part has a very wide range from low vocals to very high opera style singing. But I’m proud you like it.

Silvana:There is also a bonus DVD included from Wacken Open Air last year. Who came up with the idea for the dvd?
We wanted to have something special for those fans who directly buy the album after it’s released. So we had the idea to put our Wacken Gig (which was a great experience for us) on the DVD.

Van Canto planned a few summer festivals like Rock Harz in Germany, Ragnarock and Rage against Racism. Can we expect more festivals this summer?
Yes, we play festivals with Apocalyptica and all Metalfests. We come around.

Silvana:And lots of German shows too, any plans to do some shows in The Netherlands and or Belgium?
Yes, we try to get some support slots for a bigger band or try to do own shows later this year.

Silvana:About the quest appearance from Chris Boltendahl from Grave Digger, Victor Smolski from Rage and Tony Kakko from Sonata Arctica. It's suprising :)
Is it? Great. That’s what we wanted :-)

Silvana:Can you tell our readers a bit more about the ideas for the guest appearance. Why did you choose for Tony Kakko and how did you contact him?
Tony is one of my favourite singers so I was very happy when Stef contacted him and asked him to do guest vocals on this song. He quickly agreed and did a great job. He is a very kind and professional guy. I am very proud about this duet.

Silvana:I just read the news that Van Canto reached number 84 in the German Long Play Charts. Congratz with that.
It’s number 83, haha! Yes, we were totally surprised. It’s great that we reached so many people in the last 3 years.

Silvana:Is Rebellion the first single of the new album? Van Canto is busy making a videoclip for that song if i am right? How is progress going?
We do not have a real single, and since we already did videos for “Lost Forever” and “Last Night of the kings”, Rebellion will be the third song with video. We want all Van Canto Fans to join this clip by recording themselves in Scottish dresses and performing playback to this video.

Is there anything i forgot to ask and you want to mention for our readers?
Again: Thanks for your interest in Van Canto. It’s great to have so many open minded metalheads around.

I want to thank you for the interview and come soon to The Netherlands please? ;)
We will! I promise. Rakkatakka!
